A Day in the Life of Koa: Summer Streets NYC
A "typical" day in Koa's life is never actually typical — that's the whole point of raising a dog in New York City. There's always something new waiting just outside the front door, and Koa has made it his life's mission to sniff out every last bit of it.
Today's mission: Summer Streets.
What Is Summer Streets, Anyway?
For the uninitiated: a few Saturdays every summer, NYC shuts down miles of major avenues to cars and hands them right back to the people (and the dogs). No traffic, no honking, no dodging cabs — just open pavement from the Brooklyn Bridge all the way up through the Upper East Side.
It is, hands down, one of the best free things this city does. And Koa was not about to sleep in for it.
Koa's Morning Agenda
Before the sun was even fully up, the plan was set:
- Run
- Explore
- Take in the city
- Find something fun
Four items. Zero compromises. A perfect New York morning.
A Run Through an Empty Manhattan
There's nothing quite like running down a Manhattan avenue when the traffic disappears and the city belongs to you. Just pavement, skyline, and a very determined dog three steps ahead of you.
Koa lives for this. New smells, new people, new dogs to size up — for a city dog, a car-free avenue is basically Disneyland, except the churros are optional and the people-watching is unbeatable.
This is the thing about New York that never gets old: you can run the exact same route on any other day of the year and it feels like a completely different city once you take the cars out of the equation.
Then... Bubbles!
No day in Koa's life is complete without an unplanned plot twist, and today it came in the form of a stray cloud of bubbles drifting down the street.
Did Koa understand where they came from? No. Did he need to? Also no.
He was, for a solid two minutes, completely captivated. And honestly, that's one of the best parts of exploring the city with a dog — you never know what random, tiny moment is going to end up being the highlight of the day. A bubble machine on a Saturday morning has no business being this much fun, and yet.
Pup Cup Time
After all that running and investigating, Koa had clearly earned a reward, and he knew exactly what it was.
A pup cup.
Let's be honest about the hierarchy of Koa's morning:
- Running — great.
- Bubbles — a delight.
- Pup cup — best surprise.
Every good NYC adventure needs a snack stop, and for Koa, whipped cream in a tiny cup is the whole reason to get out of bed. No adventure is complete without one, and no dog has ever earned one more thoroughly.
Lucky We Live NYC 🗽
This is what people who don't live here never quite get: you can walk out your front door on an ordinary Saturday and stumble into an actual adventure. No planning, no reservations, no permission needed.
One weekend it's Central Park. The next it's a random street in Brooklyn. Sometimes it's a new restaurant, a neighborhood you've never wandered into, or a walk that quietly turns into something more. New York doesn't hand you adventure on a schedule — it just leaves it lying around, waiting for you to notice.
And when Koa's along for the ride, there's always a reason to stop, sniff, and stay a little longer.
If Koa Wrote His Own Itinerary
If Koa could plan his own days, it would probably look like this:
- Wake up.
- Go outside.
- Explore NYC.
- Make friends.
- Find snacks.
- Repeat.
Simple. Perfect. Honestly kind of enviable.
Lucky We Live NYC ❤️
New York isn't just where we happen to live — it's the playground. The backdrop. The reason there's always a "next adventure" on the calendar.
And Koa? He's always ready for it.
