A Fall Escape from the City: Apple Picking and Family Fun at Dr. Davies Farm

There’s something about fall in New York that feels like pure magic. The air is crisp, the leaves are golden, and weekends are made for cozy sweaters and outdoor adventures. With my aunt and uncle visiting from out of town, I wanted to show them a slice of autumn beyond the city skyline—so we packed up the car and headed to Dr. Davies Farm in Congers, New York, for a day of apple picking, pumpkin patches, and cider sipping.

Just about an hour’s drive from Manhattan, Dr. Davies Farm is a quick, scenic escape that feels worlds away from the hustle and bustle of NYC. Nestled along the Hudson Valley, this family-owned farm has been around since 1891, and you can feel that rich history the moment you arrive. Rows upon rows of apple trees stretch across the hills, the scent of fresh cider donuts fills the air, and the laughter of families echoes between the orchards.

Koa was in heaven—the farm is dog-friendly, which means your four-legged family members can join in on the fun. He trotted alongside us through the orchard, occasionally stopping to sniff fallen apples or pose for the camera (he’s got quite the fan club these days!).

We started with apple picking, baskets in hand, wandering between trees heavy with crisp Empires, McIntoshes, and Honeycrisps. There’s nothing quite like biting into a freshly picked apple—cool, sweet, and just a little tart. After filling our bags, we made our way through the corn maze, a must for both kids and adults. It’s easy to get a little lost, but that’s part of the fun—and the laughter that follows.

Next up was the pumpkin patch, where we searched for the perfect pumpkin to bring home. Whether for carving, baking, or just decorating the porch, it’s hard to leave without at least one (okay, maybe two). We finished the afternoon with warm apple cider and fresh donuts—simple, perfect fall treats that hit the spot after a few hours outdoors.

One thing to note: Dr. Davies Farm is cash only, so make sure to stop at an ATM before you go. There’s free parking on-site, and it’s open daily during the fall season. If you’re driving from NYC, just hop on the Palisades Parkway—it’s an easy and scenic route, with views that make the drive part of the adventure.

What made the day truly special wasn’t just the apples or the cider, but sharing it all with family—and watching Koa run between the trees, tail wagging. There’s something grounding about stepping away from the city, even for a day, to reconnect with nature and loved ones.

Tips for Your Visit:

🍎 Go early — The farm gets busy on weekends, and mornings are quieter with better apple-picking options

🐾 Bring your pup — Dogs are welcome but should stay on leash

💵 Cash only — Bring small bills for apples, cider, and snacks

🚗 Plan for the drive — It’s about an hour from NYC (without traffic)

There are plenty of orchards around New York, but Dr. Davies Farm has that old-fashioned charm that makes it feel timeless—simple pleasures, big smiles, and memories that stick long after the last leaf falls.

A perfect fall day? Check. Apples for days? Double check. Happy family and one very tired pup? Absolutely.
