Koa's Christmas Tradition in New York City
Christmas in New York City is a season of wonder, but experiencing it with Koa, my Rhodesian Ridgeback, makes it truly unforgettable. Together, we dive into the city’s festive charm, from sparkling lights to iconic holiday landmarks, creating memories that feel as magical as a storybook come to life. The holiday season begins in our cozy Manhattan apartment. With Koa by my side, we transform our space into a mini winter wonderland.
Christmas Eve is all about winding down together, especially when the first dusting of snow blankets the city. We cozy up on the couch to watch holiday classics like Miracle on 34th Street and How the Grinch Stole Christmas. While I string popcorn garlands for the tree, Koa enjoys a special homemade pupcake. It’s a peaceful and heartwarming moment before the excitement of Christmas Day unfolds.
Koa’s tail wagging wakes me on Christmas morning, ready for a day of adventure. We start with a run through Central Park. Afterward, it’s time to embrace our favorite Christmas tradition: exploring the city’s most festive spots.
- The Fifth Avenue Windows: Our first stop is Fifth Avenue, where the holiday window displays at Saks, Bergdorf Goodman, and other iconic stores are a feast for the eyes. Koa tilts his head at the twinkling lights and animated scenes, as curious as ever. The magic of the displays never fails to bring out my inner child
- The Rockefeller Center Tree: No Christmas is complete without a visit to the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree. The massive tree, adorned with thousands of glittering lights, is a stunning sight. Koa, dressed in his festive red scarf, poses like a natural in front of the iconic landmark while tourists and locals alike gush over him
- Bryant Park Winter Village: From there, we stroll to Bryant Park’s Winter Village. I browse the artisanal holiday market stalls, sipping hot cocoa, while Koa enjoys the attention from friendly strangers and curious children. The energy of the park, with its ice skating rink and bustling holiday vibe, is pure joy
- Macy’s at Herald Square: Our final stop is Macy’s at Herald Square. The enchanting window displays here tell whimsical holiday tales that captivate us both. Koa’s favorite windows are the ones filled with animated toy animals and twinkling lights, a magical conclusion to our holiday tour
No Christmas would be complete without a photo with Santa! Each year, Koa and I visit one of the city’s pet-friendly Santa events. Koa sits patiently, looking dapper in his festive attire. It’s a tradition we treasure, and it’s always heartwarming to see Santa’s eyes light up when he meets Koa.
After a day filled with holiday magic, we return home to unwind. For dinner, our tradition is simple yet special: steak and potatoes for two (with a small, Koa-approved portion for my loyal companion). We snuggle up by the window, gazing out at the city lights while reflecting on the joy of the day.
For me, Christmas in New York City isn’t just about the dazzling displays or iconic landmarks. It’s about the bond I share with Koa, the traditions we’ve created together, and the joy of finding magic in the little things.
What about you? What are your Christmas traditions? Whether it’s baking cookies, exploring your city, or cozying up with loved ones, I’d love to hear how you make the season special!
Happy Holidays from Koa and me in NYC!
